  13. Taylor Metalworks (USA)

    Orchard Park, NY
Description: Taylor Metalworks, Inc. (TMi) was started in 1948 by John Taylor. It was a small family owned and operated business. The original building was a truck terminal in Buffalo, New York. Starting with this 8,000 square feet and one small Blanchard grinder, Buffalo Grinding Service, Inc. (or BGS as it was known then), grew through additions to 18,000 square feet and over thirty major grinding machine tools. As its reputation for quality and precise work grew, BGS eventually served several hundred customers in a wide variety of fields (aerospace, computer, food, military, communication, recreation) covering a large market in the northeast United States. After twenty-four years in the precision grinding business, the company found opportunities and potential in the field of automatic machining utilizing six-spindle bar automatics. Consequently, in 1972, the company phased out the grinding business and developed its present business of automatic machining. TMi is the major supplier of screw machine products to McGard Inc., a manufacturer and distributor of security fasteners sold internationally. In 1985, the Company diversified into the aluminum casting field by acquiring a local V-Process casting company. With its increased use of CNC machining, it found a growing market in the area of machined aluminum castings. Due to the acquisition and the limited space available in Buffalo, new buildings were erected in Orchard Park, NY. The move was made in the fall of 1985. At the same time, the name of the company was changed to Taylor – Pohlman, Inc. (TPi). Over the next several years, TPi developed the V-Process / machined casting concept to the point where hundreds of customers across the United States were benefiting from this innovative approach to near-net-shape manufacturing. With this acceptance, in 2000 a new building was completed in Arcade, New York housing the country’s most productive V-Process molding line. This casting operation was known as TPi-Arcade, Inc. In 2002, with the general economy in the doldrums, Ligon Industries bought the casting operations of Taylor – Pohlman including the Arcade operations. This very clearly separated the casting activities from the machining activities, but the relationship has endured. Taylor – Pohlman, Inc., encompassing all of the machining activities, was renamed Taylor Metalworks, Inc. (TMi). So as of this writing, TMi is now the significant supplier of screw product to McGard, Inc. and the major machining subcontractor to TPi-Arcade, Inc.
